When Is the JEE Main Conducted Every year?

The JEE is one of India’s most challenging competitive exams and is conducted every year in two phases, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The first phase of JEE (JEE-Main) is formerly known as AIEEE – All India Engineering Entrance Examination. It is an Indian standardised computer-based examination for entry to various specialised programmes in B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning across various colleges in India. JEE is usually conducted twice every year. The NTA (National Testing Agency) is the exam conducting authority for JEE Main.

The NTA conducts the exam for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, etc. programmes in premier technical institutes in India, such as NITs, IIITs, etc., which considers the rank of the candidate in the JEE Main. The JEE Main and JEE Advanced have been conducted online as a CBT mode since 2019. JEE Main is generally conducted in two sessions, mostly in January and April. In 2023, JEE Main is scheduled to commence in January and April, whereas, in 2022, JEE Main was conducted in June and July due to clashes with other board exams. And JEE Main 2023 registration would likely start 45 days before the examination date for both sessions separately. Thus, candidates must apply for both sessions separately whenever the registration portal is live. Also, it is not mandatory to appear for all the sessions of JEE Main.

In 2023, the first session of JEE Main was conducted in January, and 8.22 lakh candidates appeared for the exam. NTA has also announced the results of JEE Main 2023 Paper 1 – B.E /B.Tech candidates on 7 February 2023. As the first session of JEE Main 2023 is over, students are waiting for the update on the second session registration. As per the initial notification released by NTA, the second session of JEE Main will be conducted in April, and the registration will start on 7 February 2023. However, the registration process for the 2nd attempt is delayed.

The second session of JEE Main is the best chance for the candidates who couldn’t score much in the first session. According to the information bulletin published by the NTA, the JEE Main 2023 exam dates (tentative) for the 2nd attempt are given as 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, and 12 April 2023. However, the examination dates may change subject to the demands of candidates appearing for JEE Main. As NTA is the exam conducting authority for JEE Main, NTA  decides the examination dates ensuring that there will be no interference with the Board examinations, which may be held at various times across the States/UTs in India.

Students who are willing to appear for JEE Main should start preparing for the exam along with their academic classes. The first session of JEE Main will likely be conducted in January; hence, students should focus more on the JEE preparation to score a good percentile. Sometimes, the NTA may conduct the first attempt at JEE Main after the board examination. However, the first attempt at JEE Main will be mostly before the Class 12 board examination or immediately after the board examination.
